Background:Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a significant impairment of executive functioning in children and adolescents. In the United States, ADHD prevalence is high; however, the impact of ADHD has not been well defined, despite the availability of a plethora of effective treatments for the condition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of ADHD on the child's functioning in terms of quality of life.
Methods:We conducted a literature search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Clinical Dictionito, and selected relevant studies based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. We conducted an analysis using the Cochrane Collaboration's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PCR) guidelines. We selected studies using the following criteria: (1) abstract size > 1000; (2) intervention length < 5; (3) study design; and (4) intervention type and intervention duration.
Results:Our findings were consistent across the studies. The prevalence of ADHD was similar to the prevalence of ADHD in children aged 6 to 18 years. However, there were differences in the outcomes, including quality of life (QoL) and functioning.
Conclusions:Our findings suggest that ADHD does not affect functioning in terms of QoL and functioning in children and adolescents. However, it is important to recognize that the benefits of ADHD treatment, especially for children and adolescents, may vary from one child to another. Furthermore, the ADHD impact on QoL should be assessed and considered as a potential limitation in the design of trials.
PATIENTS AND METHODSEthical considerations:This was an open-label, blinded, randomized, controlled trial. The trial was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. All patients provided written informed consent before the study was conducted. The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board of AstraZeneca PLC (approval number: 17/089.0), and the trial was registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov ().
Study population:The participants were randomly assigned to one of the three groups (n = 25), or to the placebo (n = 25) group. The placebo group had standard-of-care ADHD symptoms, and the active ADHD medication (Strattera) was not used. The ADHD medication groups were started at the same time-point, and treatment continued for 2 years (3-5 years) after the start of the intervention period. The participants in the active ADHD medication group were started with a standard-of-care ADHD treatment (Strattera) for 2 years, and the placebo group received a standard-of-care ADHD medication for 5 years. The study period was as follows: (a) baseline; (b) treatment and control; (c) treatment and control; (d) treatment and treatment; (e) treatment and treatment; (f) treatment and treatment; (g) treatment and treatment; (h) treatment and treatment; (i) treatment and treatment; and (j) treatment and treatment.
